Biography
Jeremy Wood is an American photographer living and working in Alaska. His work focuses on the drama of the natural world, drawing inspiration from the luminism of 19th-century romantic landscape and seascape painters; especially Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Church, and J. M. W. Turner.
An artist and musician since early childhood, Jeremy started photographing the coastal redwood forests, clear mountain rivers, and storm-beaten rocky shore around his hometown in the Pacific Northwest. He has carried this lifelong passion while embarked on a variety of professional pursuits. From serving aboard the USS Ronald Reagan as a nuclear machinist’s mate to building classical guitars as an apprentice, and from sailing as 1st Mate on a charter sailing vessel to maintaining firefighting aircraft in Alaska, his vocation as an artist and photographer has remained, and his camera is always close by.
There are moments when a scene is so dramatic and beautiful that everything else falls away. We hold our breath, absorbing it while it lasts. Jeremy’s work seems to freeze these moments, then visually convey his emotional perception of the scene. His images will often reach out to distant mountains. Then, at times, they draw in close to study a small pattern or texture that might normally go unnoticed.
